All-natural Chest Congestion Remedies

All-natural Chest Congestion Remedies

Author: Alien

We all hate it when a cold takes over our bodies. There are millions of different types of colds that we can catch. However, most of the colds result in a painful feeling taking over our chests. This is known as chest congestion. The best way to describe what is going on in your body is that the mucus is becoming built up in your chest. This build up causes you to have discomfort in your chest and make it so that it is hard to breathe. You can also experience a difficult time in trying to cough up the mucus as well. Most people run out to purchase a remedy for this situation.

Causes

The most common cause of sinus and lung congestion is a cold or flu virus. Additionally, secondary bacterial infections that follow on the heels of colds and flus can be especially nasty, irritating the delicate lining in the respiratory tract. The mucus that causes the congestion is produced to protect that lining and wash away the infection.

Symptoms

Just when your child is getting over a cold or the flu, his temperature starts to climb and he begins to have coughing fits and spit up mucus. When you take him to the doctor, you're likely to hear one of those ''-itis'' words, which means something is inflamed.

In this case, the -itis is bronchitis, and it means inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the two large tubes that branch off the windpipe. Bronchitis can be caused by wayward bacteria from the throat or by the same virus that caused the initial cold or flu. As the lining of those tubes swells, mucus builds up. The heavy coughing is a sign that your child is trying to clear that mucus from his bronchial passages.

If the bronchitis is caused by bacteria, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic. If it's a viral infection, an antibiotic won't help, but there's a lot you can do to make your child more comfortable and maybe even get over it faster. Here are some home-remedy tactics that doctors recommend for both bacterial and viral bronchitis.

Home remedy

Natural remedies are great aliments to treat and cure common ailments. There are more treatments to treat the symptoms of chest congestion. A doctor visit isn't always necessary to visit when you can treat common ailments. These are natural remedy recipes have been handed down from generation to generation.

Home remedy #1: Onions have been a natural remedy for many common ailments. A sautéed and curried onion is the cure for chest congestion. Two onions, extra-virgin olive oil and curry powder are all you need to treat this aliment. The onions should be sliced thinly and sautéed in 1 teaspoon of curry powder with two tablespoons of the virgin olive oil.

This treatment isn't good on the breath. But it works wonders for the congestion. Just does sauté onions on a plate of rice help congestion? The secret ingredients in this treatment are the sulfur and querectin found in the onions. These two ingredients break up the mucus. What is the purpose of the curry powder in this recipe? The curry powder looses up the phlegm that associates with the chest congestion.

Home remedy #2: Hot tea isn't just to soothe the sore throat. For generations tea has been a treatment for aliments. What most do not is that hot tea is a soothing agent in treating chest congestion. The hot tea loosens and breaks up the mucus. Not only will it break up the mucus, it will moisten the throat.

Home remedy #3: Spicy foods are good to clear up sinuses and a stuffy nose. What most do not realize is that spicy foods break up the mucus of chest congestion. The hot spicy ingredients do wonders for those who are suffering from chest congestion.

Using Aromatherapy Essential Oils

The Amateur Naturalist

Oil aromatherapy is a popular method used by many to reduce stress and scent the interior air of your home with a pleasant flower or herbal fragrance. There are a wide variety of aromatherapy oils available, lending themselves to a plethora of different purposes. You will find aromatherapy essential oils available as or used in essential oil blends, massage oils, hand and body lotions, flower waters, as well as in herbal bags designed for use in your clothes dryer. Oil blends utilizing aromatherapy oils are readily available for your use in an aromatherapy diffuser and other types of aromatherapy products.

The key to getting the most scent out of your oil aromatherapy is to heat the oil, and in order to do that you will want to use some type of aromatherapy diffuser. You can apply heat to your aromatherapy essential oils by using a candle, a light bulb, or an electric heater. A light bulb diffuser is a hollow ring that fits over the top of a light bulb. You put a few drops of oil in the ring, and then turn on the light to begin heating the oil and releasing its pleasant aroma. This option takes up practically no room, yet can effectively scent a room.

A candle diffuser places a shallow basin above a tea light. These aromatherapy products are highly decorative and function as both a useful and attractive room accessory.

Other aromatherapy supplies you might want to keep on hand include massage oils. Vegetable oils are combined with aromatherapy essential oils to create an oil perfectly suited for your next massage session, yet can also be added to your bath for a luxuriously scented soak. Hand and body lotions can also contain fragrant essential oils. These wonderful lotions smooth your skin and moisturize it if it is feeling dry and flaky. At the same time, you will also enjoy the fresh scent of the essential oil, which may help to lift your mood and improve your emotions. Unscented lotions are also available, so that you can add your choice of essential oils and make your own custom fragrance lotion.

If you prefer a lighter fragrance, then you might enjoy flower water. A combination of distilled water and essential oils, it is a subtle way to add fragrance to your body, your bath or any room in your home or office. Oil aromatherapy, used in conjunction with appropriate aromatherapy supplies such as light bulb or candle diffusers, will make a sensational way to add fragrance to your life.

Health: Your guide to Horse chestnut extract

Horse chestnut extract is a less-talked about herbal supplement that can be very beneficial to your health. Coming from the horse chestnut herb, it has shown a wide variety of applications as a supplement. It harbors anti-inflammatory properties which act as anti oxidants and help to protect your body from the harmful effects that free radicals can have by breaking down your body's cell walls. Because of its anti inflammatory properties, it has been used to treat hemorrhoids.
Its landmark feature, however, has to do with your veins. Horse chestnut extract has been shown to help improve vein health by eliminating such symptoms as pain, lethargy, and heaviness in the legs that come with poor vein health. Many people take horse chestnut extract for its ability to help varicose veins, the unsightly condition caused by fragile blood vessels and poor circulation. A compound known as aescin is found in horse chestnut extract, which appears to 'patch up' tiny leaks in blood vessels and capillaries, improving their health, strength, and elasticity. If you are beginning to think about taking horse chestnut extract yourself, it's important to start on the right path. Make sure you buy only pharmaceutical grade horse chestnut extract, which should contain somewhere between 15 and 20 percent aescin.

A commonly used dosage for the extract is 50mg per supplement.
As always, remember to ask a doctor if you are taking any medications that the horse chestnut extract may interfere with. For instance, horse chestnut extract has been shown to be detrimental to the effect of blood thinners, which can cause serious complications if taken in tandem. Also, if you are pregnant or nursing, you'd be best avoiding the horse chestnut extract as to not test the waters with the young one. We hope you've learned all you want to know about horse chestnut extract!

Home remedy for insomnia

Humans need at least 7-8 hours of sound sleep every 24 hours, to remain mentally alert and physically active during work hours. Older people may sleep less at night and have small naps during the day to fulfill the body’s requirement of sleep. But getting a restful sleep is not something that everyone enjoys. There are many people who suffer from insomnia either due to a physical disturbance or a mental turmoil. Taking sleeping pills to cure insomnia is just a temporary solution. To add to that it is also a dangerous one. Short term or long term use lead to psychological dependence and addiction. It is advisable to try out some home remedies before you pop in the pill to induce sleep. Home remedies are based on natural processes and products and can at times be extremely helpful in inducing sleep. If your physical activity levels during the day are low, you are liable to develop what is known as a Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS).

Uneasiness in the legs makes it difficult for the brain to rest. This can keep you from getting a restful sleep. Increasing physical activity helps in better sleep. If you cannot find time to go to the gym in the evening, try and make adjustments in your work schedules. Make better choices – take the stairs when you can, get up on your own instead of using the internal extension numbers. Small changes like this will automatically increase your activity levels, reducing the chances of a RLS.

Sometimes too many challenges in a day at work can agitate the mind to an extent that shedding those thoughts become difficult. A long walk in the evening can relieve stress. It also tires you a little; just enough to let you sleep peacefully. There are specific yogic postures that can help in relaxing the mind and body. These postures do not put too much pressure on the muscles. Deep breathing coupled with some simple postures have contributed significantly in helping insomnia patients.

A cup of hot milk, preferably with honey and a pinch of cinnamon, acts as a natural sedative if taken at bedtime. Honey has been known to be effective in bringing on sleep. Two teaspoons of honey in warm water before bedtime can do the trick in many cases. Just as some foods help in restful sleep, there are others that can have the opposite effect. The caffeine content in coffee and caffeinated colas stimulates the mind and can keep you awake for long periods. A heavy dinner will also lead to a situation where sleep does not come easy. This happens due to the fact that the digestive system requires time to digest food.

Avoiding caffeine and choosing to have a light dinner are advocated if you want to ensure a good night’s sleep.

A warm bath just before going to bed has been a favorite home remedy among many. A hot bath can change the body temperature and therefore assists in the relaxation process.

If you have brought your worries from office to home it is most likely that you will find it difficult to sleep. Learn how to turn off your mind by meditation, relaxation techniques and positive thinking. It is a time tested home remedy for insomnia.Insomnia is almost always a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Some of the major reasons behind insomnia are mental conditions like clinical depression and bipolar disorder. Natural remedies for depression is also an option that you can choose. Treating depression naturally helps you avoid all the side effects that come along with antidepressants and mood elevators. Since insomnia is a significant symptom of depression, treating depression can help you rid yourself of sleepless nights.

Poem from a dying young girl

This poem was written by a terminally ill young girl in a
New York Hospital .

It was sent by a medical doctor -

SLOW DANCE

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask How are you?
Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?

You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,'Hi'

You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....Thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.

What You Must Know About Herbs For Allergies

Allergic reactions can absolutely make a wretched being out of you. There are various symptoms that you can experience, such as sneezing, watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, hives, and even anaphylactic shock. Antihistamines, decongestants, and other prescribed drugs may offer temporary relief, but their side effects, such as sleepiness and confusion, can be as debilitating as the symptoms themselves. Hopefully, you can spend the rest of the day resting and letting the effects wear off without your routine getting too disrupted.

Unfortunately, the ordinary person usually does have daily tasks that demand vitality and presence of mind. Since this is the case, then allergies must be dealt with sans having to suffer from the unfortunate side effects.

What’s the ideal solution?
Herbs for allergies could be one of the answers to this particular problem. Some herbs can provide natural allergy relief through their antihistamine and decongestant properties. There are many of them, but we can name the more popular few.

Some of these herbs for allergies are the following:
Herbal Antihistamines
These herbs are the ones that block the body’s histamines from launching the symptoms of an allergy. The most popular herbal antihistamine nowadays is the stinging nettle, a decided favorite among natural allergy relief programs. Other antihistamine herbs for allergies are eyebright, chamomile, yarrow, wild rue, jewelweed, tarragon, ginger, basil, amaranth, fennel, ginkgo, and passionflower. When it comes to fruits, Barbados cherry, papaya, capsicum and fig are not only rich in vitamins, but they also contain antihistamine compounds and also offer natural allergy relief.
Decongestant Herbs
Some decongestant herbs for allergies are eucalyptus, marshmallow root, burdock, mullein, white pine, garlic, onion, chili, and horseradish. They give natural allergy relief by opening up the sinus cavities and soothing sinus pressure, as well as loosening up mucus, and clearing the congestion in your head. These herbs for allergies are not only great for treating the symptoms, but are also effective in boosting the body’s immune system. While getting rid of the symptoms is one way of dealing with allergies, a more holistic and efficient approach is to prevent the allergic reaction in the first place.

To go a step further, it would be even better if the allergy was eliminated altogether. Hopefully, the mentioned herbs for allergies and their anti-oxidant content can strengthen your immune system, so much so that they are able to perform these wonders successfully.

About Rosacea

What is it? Rosacea
Acne Rosacea is a common, long-term and non-contagious skin disorder. Symptoms vary, are often intermittent and are denoted by facial redness and flushing, frequently resembling a permanent blush or sunburn. Skin may also look bumpy with tiny red spots and small blood vessels may appear. Sometimes burning, stinging or itching can be felt.

Where does it appear?
Developing gradually, Rosacea appears most often on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead. It can be found on the neck, chest, scalp or ears too. In around 50% of sufferers the eyes are affected resulting in discomfort and redness.
Fair-skinned adults between 30 and 50 years old seem to be most prone, although children can occasionally be affected. Despite the fact that men tend to suffer from it more severely, Rosacea is more prevalent in women.

What triggers it?
Whilst the cause is unknown (experts believe it could be a combination of genetic and environmental factors), a Rosacea 'flare-up' can be triggered by exposure to a number of common situations. According to a British National Rosacea Society survey1, the most common triggers are:
*Sun exposure *Emotional stress *Spicy foods
*Hot/cold weather *Wind *Alcohol *Hot baths

How can it be treated?
There is no known cure. However, the good news is that rosacea can be easily diagnosed by either a GP or dermatologist and then often successfully controlled through treatment. Many sufferers mistake Rosacea as simply part of the skin's natural ageing process and therefore miss out on early diagnosis, which is usually key to successful treatment. The essential first step in controlling Rosacea is to avoid potential stimulants Dietary supplements
Make sure your body is getting the right levels of all its main nutrients by taking a good multi-vitamin and multi-mineral supplements. Natural source vitamin E can be particularly beneficial.

02 Performance Hydration, Biozyme, Biomins, Cell food DHEA and Omega 3-6-9 and Ellagic Plus.

Skin care advice
Soothing skincare is ideal for helping to keep skin calm and under control:
• Choose carefully and look for ranges that include good quality ingredients, especially soothing botanicals and
vitamins. Certain ingredients may overly stimulate Rosacea including: acetone; clove oil; menthol; tea tree oil; witch hazel and 'chemical' sunscreens, such as benzophenones and methoxycinnamates.
• Always remember if you are unsure which products will suit you, carry out a patch test first.
• Since the sun is such a common trigger, in an ideal world it is best to either cover up or try to avoid it. As this is not always realistic (and a little sunshine is good for our wellbeing), the right sunscreen is essential.
Apply a sunscreen containing broad spectrum filters that will protect against both UVB and UVA rays.
• Consider sunscreens that provide skin with a physical barrier to reflect rather than absorb UV light. Those containing inert mineral filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are good examples. Atria products that contain these ingredients are Atria Tinted Moisturizer Natural, Light & Lovely Whipped Makeup Base, Nurturing Eye Crème, Cell Recovery Hydrating Day Crème and Replenishing Moisture Complex.

about psoriasis

Introduction to Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic and genetic skin disorder that occurs in up to 3% of the population
worldwide. It is not contagious. The most common form is plaque, or patch, psoriasis.
The term plaque is used to describe the raised and red scaling patches on the skin that are
a primary characteristic of this disease. The scales within the plaques are often silvercolored
and thickened and appear most frequently on the elbows, knees, and lower back.
However, all areas of the skin are susceptible.

Psoriasis is most common in people of western European or Scandinavian descent. It is
less common in blacks or Asians and hardly ever occurs in pure Native Americans.
Psoriasis is more emotional than physically disabling. It can erode self esteem and cause
patients to withdraw from activities in an effort to conceal the disfigurement caused by
the plaques. Ironically, patients who refrain from outdoor pastimes lose the benefit of
sunshine, one of the key treatments in keeping psoriasis under control.

Causes of Psoriasis
The exact causes of psoriasis are not yet known, however research indicates psoriasis
tends to be genetic. Psoriasis flare-ups are not caused by but can be fueled by these
known triggers:
• Cold weather and/or lack of exposure to sunlight
• Emotional or physical stress
• Other infections in the body
• Trauma or injury, such as a cut or bruise
• Genetic disposition

the skin. Use Nurture Skin Serum mixed with Nurture Skin Crème on areas of the face,
hairline, scalp, elbows and body that are exhibiting signs of psoriasis.

Introduction to Dermatitis and Eczema

Dermatitis means inflammation of the skin. Dermatologists use the term to describe a
specific group of inflammatory skin diseases, or rashes. Dermatitis is also known as
eczema; in medical circles, the words are often used interchangeably. However, eczema
is usually associated with atopic dermatitis.

Dermatitis can occur in many forms. The most common forms are atopic and contact. Up
to 25 percent of all patients with skin disease in the United States have a form of
dermatitis. The most common symptoms are itchy, swollen, and reddened skin.
There are three stages of dermatitis: acute, subacute, and chronic. The disease may start
at any of these stages, remain in one stage, or evolve to another.
• Acute dermatitis can occur quickly with symptoms of itching, redness, and
swelling of the skin that may progress to scratch marks.
• Subacute dermatitis is characterized by scaliness, peeling, scratch marks, and skin
redness.
• Chronic dermatitis is characterized by moderate to intense itching, crustiness,
thickened, discolored, scaly, and painfully cracked skin. These symptoms usually
develop slowly and persist over long periods of time. Scratching and rubbing can
become a habit.

Acute dermatitis may be treated with cool, wet compresses, oral steroids, and
antihistamines. Topical corticosteroids are often the treatment of choice for subacute and
chronic dermatitis. This type of medicine is used to reduce inflammation and to help
relieve the itching, swelling, redness, and discomfort of many skin problems. Ask your
doctor if topical corticosteroids may be right for you.

SWEET POISON

In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick. She had stomach
spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major
chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain.
By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was
on 24 various prescription medications. The doctors could not determine
what was wrong with her. She was in so much pain, and so sick.
She just knew she was dying. She put her house, bank accounts, lifeinsurance, etc., in
her oldest daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of.
She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22 ND.
On March 19 I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said
they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS.
I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister
if she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she
was getting ready to crack one open that moment.
I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda!
I e-mailed her the article my friend, a lawyer, had sent.
My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me
she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle
spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but she sure felt a lot
better. She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would
call me when she got home.
Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all
of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind.
In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet
soda...and literally dying a slow and miserable death.
When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that
was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning! She is well on her way to a complete recovery.
And she is walking! No wheelchair! This article saved her life.
If it says 'SUGAR FREE' on the label; DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!
I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on
'ASPARTAME,' marketed as 'NutraSweet,' 'Equal,' and 'Spoonful.'
In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United
States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic
lupus. It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant.
I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.

I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous:

When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic
acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants.

The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and
systemic lupus. Many people were being diagnosed in error.

Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxici ty is!
Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis,
especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. The victim usually does
not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use;
irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may become a life-threatening condition.
We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet sodas.
In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear.
We've seen many cases where vision loss returned and hearing loss improved markedly.

This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia.
During a lecture, I said, 'If you are using ASPARTAME (NutraSweet, Equal,
Spoonful, etc) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting,
pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches,
tinnitus, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred
speech, blurred vision, or memory loss you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!'
People were jumping up during the lecture saying, 'I have some of these symptoms.
Is it reversible?
Yes! Yes! Yes! STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food
labels! Many products are fortified with it! This is a serious problem.
Dr. Espart (one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be
symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice, a nurse stated
that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been
diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence!

Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM
(salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave
carbohydrates. It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight!
These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells,
particularly in the hips and thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin
andis used primarily to preserve 'tissue specimens.' Many products we use
every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!
Dr. H J. Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the 'diet
products' and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an
average of 19 pounds over a trial period.

Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics.
We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with
retinopathy, in fact, had symptoms caused by Aspartame.
The Aspartame drives the bloodsugar out of control. Thus diabetics may
suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that aspartic acid and
phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance.
Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE. Especially with diabetics, the
Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrierand it then deteriorates the neurons
of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage, seizures, depression,
manic depression, panic attacks, uncontrollable anger and rage.
Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics as well.
Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children
diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behavior
when these chemicals have been removed from their diet. So called 'behavior
modification prescription drugs' (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed.
Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place! Most of these
children were being 'poisoned' on a daily basis with the very foods that were 'better for them than sugar.'
It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke
and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be
partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.
Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e . mental retardation,
if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy.
Children are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER
be given artificial sweeteners. There are many different case histories to
relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological
disturbances talking about a plague of neurological diseases directly caused
by the use of this deadly poison.'

Herein lies the problem:
There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included 100 different
products and strong objection was made concerning its use. Since this
initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, and still nothing
has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets.
Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame has EXPIRED! There are now over 5,000
products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will be
thousands more introduced. Everybody wants a 'piece of the Aspartame pie.'
I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is.
And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes
Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the American College of Physicians?

This has been recently exposed in the New York Times.
These [organizations] cannot criticize any additives or convey their link
to MONSANTO because they take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their products.
Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require
label warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding
pregnant women, children and infants. The bill would also institute
independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the
general population regarding seizures, changes in brain chemistry, neurological changes and behavioral symptoms.

The bill was killed.
It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for
this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and uninformed public.

Stop pulling those dandelions !

Living in a society that wants their laws to be so immaculately "weed free" is especially difficult for me! Years ago I had the chance to learn how to recognize and use many roadside herbs and weeds we find everywhere, even in our backyard....at least mine! I've learned some pretty neat and useful things using plants that most people reject as garbage. Take the dandelion for example: A lot of people know you can use the young leaves to add to your fresh salad, or the older leaves to cook like spinach. I don't blame you if you'd rather go to the grocery store, it takes a lot of picking to get a handful of greens. But there is one part of the dandelion that I find particularly useful:

The roots. No I don't make coffee out of it, I like my usual coffee with sugar and cream, thank you. I clean and cut up the roots in small pieces and leave them to dry for later use. The reason why I clean, and chop while the root is fresh, is because when it dries, the cutting is tough!
Make yourself a nice hot tea by pouring hot water on some cut up roots, adding a spring of mint for added flavour and honey of course. Doing that regularly will fix your cold extremity problem. I'm not kidding you, I use to always have cold hands and feet, my cure was dandelion root.
The bonus part for me since I'm on a tight budget is that it didn't cost me a thing.
Cheap, and effective medecine.

SSRIs for treating depression - Why they are not recommended in some cases

Antidepressants are the most common type of drugs that are used in treating depression.
Since insomnia is one of the most common symptoms of depression, these drugs are often used to elevate depressive moods and induce sleep. Among the various kinds of antidepressants, SSRI’s are among the latest that are now being used extensively for treating insomnia.
Despite their rampant use, the efficacy of antidepressants like SSRIs to treat insomnia is not supported by clinical studies. Using SSRI’s to treat insomnia has also not been approved by the FDA.SSRIs are indicated mainly for clinical depression. This class of drugs should be used to treat insomnia only if it is one of the many symptoms of depression. However, primary care physicians tend to over-prescribe and suggest that SSRIs be used for insomnia to get quicker results. Different antidepressants have varying effects on depressive patients.

An antidepressant is a drug that acts by blocking the reuptake of brain chemicals like norepinephrine and serotonin making more of those substances available to act on receptors in the brain. SSRIs act to maintain the level of serotonin (a neurotransmitter that is involved in sleep, memory and depression) by restricting its absorption. Some of the selective serotonin inhibitors are:
* Fluoxetine (trade name Prozac)
* Paroxetine (trade name Paxil)
* Sertraline (trade name Zoloft)
All antidepressants have side effects and SSRIs are no exception to the rule. SSRIs intake may produce side effects like:
* Sleepiness
* Headaches
* Vivid dreams
* Drowsiness
* Nausea
* Loss of sexual urge
* Changes in appetite
* Weight loss or gain
* Liver or kidney damage SSRIs are also known to cause hypomania, a mood state characterized by lasting and permeating elated or irritable mood. They also cause thoughts and behaviors associated with such a mood on withdrawal. All classes of SSRIs therefore, must be tapered off gradually under professional guidance. Since SSRI’s also cause drowsiness, patients run the risk of bone fractures and injuries.SSRIs, like other antidepressants, require adequate dosage for a continuous period of four to eight weeks to take affect. In many cases the side effects may surface before the drug has had the desired effect on the depression of the patient.

Treating depression naturally by means of psychotherapy coupled with antidepressants prove more effective in treating depression related insomnia than using either method as a standalone strategy.Natural remedies for depression are another safer option for treating insomnia.

Herbs and herbal teas, homeopathy and relaxation techniques like meditation and breathing exercise are time tested remedies for treating all variants of insomnia including depression related insomnia.

Self-help - The best mild depression treatment

Clinical depression is a condition that is far removed from the everyday meaning of “feeling depressed”. Occasional sadness or absence of motivation does not classify as clinical depression. A clinical diagnosis that refers to a prolonged state of sadness, melancholia or despair is what constitutes clinical depression. The sadness needs to have reached a level where it starts hampering work schedules and social activities for it to be apt for drug treatment.

Mild depression basically means that there are some symptoms of depression but the individual is still able to do justice, although with difficulty, to family, societal or job commitments that he may have. Treating depression with antidepressants is not advisable if you are suffering from mild depression. Mild depression can be managed using natural remedies for depression.

Even though it may not need drug treatment, mild depression should not be ignored. Simple solutions can save the day if such cases of depression are identified and addressed. Sometimes it is a simple case of giving vent to your feeling in front of a relative or a friend. Sometimes sharing your experience with others who have undergone similar experiences can help a lot. Self help groups or local agencies can be approached. Select a self help group that deals with conditions in certain specific areas like bereavement, marital issues, and childhood abuse. If all this does not work, you can consult a counselor who can give professional guidance and can suggest workable tools and methods to meet the challenge head on. If you are hesitant to seek external help, try some of the following methods. Some of them may sound a bit far fetched but they have proven to work for many people. All you need is an open mind and a positive approach.

Depression is usually triggered by negative thoughts like fear. This could be fear of the future, some perceived impending disaster and sometimes even fear of success. Fighting depression that emanates from fear involves trying to find positivism in what is actually feared. Read books that tell of how to meet challenges can be helpful. This therapy called bibliotherapy has known to show good results in treating mild depression. The books that are chosen should deal with situations that are similar to the ones that you are facing. Reading about how someone else fought and struggled and ultimately emerged victorious can be a great motivating factor.

Even though depression may pull you down, force yourself to go out for parties with friends. Once in the party, the mood is likely to change, making you feel better. Try to keep away from people who always tell doomsday stories and are critical about everything. Join a laughter club. To start with you may find it a bit odd to laugh without reason. With the passage of time you will realize that you can even laugh at sorrow.
Treating depression naturally can also be achieved by listening to music. There are many music albums that you can find that help you relax. This kind of music can help you ease the tensions that have been troubling you. Meditation and deep breathing are easy to learn. Just find a quiet place where you can introspect about what is going wrong with your life. You may realize that you can actually come up with solutions to problems that seemed impossible to handle before. You should not get too disturbed with passing phases of depressive moods. Avoid medication and try your hand at self help to get out of them.

Natural prostate relief therapy

Prostate enlargement like menopause and hypermetropia (inability to see near objects) is a middle age problem. The prostate is a male gland that practically doubles its size during puberty due to certain changes in the male hormone testosterone. As the gland increases in size it starts putting pressure on the urethral canal leading to problems with urination. The symptoms start once men reach fifty and increase with advancing age. The symptoms are in proportion to the pressure that is applied on the urethra but some men are lucky not to experience them despite the enlargement.

The growth of prostate is usually benign and known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) but there is always a risk of the growth becoming malignant. One of the symptoms of BPH is an aching pain in the loins due to cystitis or acute retention of urine in the bladder. A major problem arises when the enlargement is accompanied by pain. Prostate medicine mostly targets urinary symptoms and reducing the size of the prostate. Patients have to take separate medication for pain relief. As prostate treatment may last for a long time, taking too much medication is often frustrating. In addition, the side effects of drugs too need to be managed. A sitz bath is often recommended for easing the pain the natural way to avoid over medication with pain killers. A sitz bath is a bathtub in which your buttocks and hips are immersed as if you were sitting in a chair and you bathe in a sitting position. A hot water bath in a normal tub can be equally effective provided you keep your arms and legs out of the water.

Immersing the whole body in the tub tends to disperse the heat and reduce the focus on the buttocks and hips. The water should be hot, as hot as you can bear without burning yourself.

A minimum of thirty minutes in the bath, all the while draining some water as it cools down and replenishing with more hot water, can be very effective in relieving prostate pain. The heat helps the blood to flow better. A spray of cold water on the prostate area after the hot bath will cause a quick constriction of blood vessels as if squeezing blood and toxins. Herbs for prostate enlargement like saw palmetto and stinging nettle can help relieve prostate pain and reduce the size of the gland. Homeopathic remedies like Thuja Occidentalis ( Arbor Vitae ) Cantharis (Spanish Fly), Hydrangea ( Seven Barks) Solidago Virga (Golden Rod) are some of the proven pain relief remedies for pain in the prostate region, kidneys and bladder due to BPH.

Once the symptoms of prostate enlargement surface they can progress rapidly. Managing both BPH and pain at the same involves a long term regime of medications that have troubling side effects. Urinary problems of incontinence, dribbling and frequency can affect the quality of life in old age.

Natural treatments can go a long way in avoiding side effects of conventional drugs, relieve pain and improve prostate health.

Immune system remedies - fight low immunity naturally

If you have problems with immunity, you are most likely to get frequent bouts of cold, flu and some of those minor infections. Antibiotics are indeed the wonder drugs that they are made out to be, but recklessness in their use is not recommended. It is a misnomer that antibiotics can treat and cure all viral and bacterial infections. Antibiotics do not have any affect on viruses and unnecessary administration can actually be counter productive. It can make your body immune to the drug and lead to bringing down of immunity. A natural antibiotic alternative can go a long way to help in prevent further damage that drugs can potentially cause and relieve symptoms as well.

Your body’s immune system is the first line of defense against foreign invaders: bacteria, pathogens, viruses, parasites or anything that can potentially cause disease. The spleen, thymus, lymphatic system and tonsils are all part of this extensive network of organs, tissues and cells including white blood cells, which help in self healing. Herbs for immune system and natural foods should be made a part of your daily routine to strengthen this complex system.

Low immunity is either primary or acquired. Primary conditions are mostly due to a genetic predisposition. Acquired conditions of low immunity are greatly affected by eating habits, lifestyle and overuse of medication for minor ailments like common cold etc.

There is scientific evidence that a natural diet, herbal antibiotics and an active lifestyle boost your immune system health and help in avoiding simple diseases as common cold or life threatening diseases like cancer.

* Vitamin A, C and E are most essential for maintaining immune system health. A handful of almonds daily will provide you sufficient quantity of Vitamin E. guava, oranges and other citrus fruits are a natural source of Vitamin C.

* Garlic is perhaps the oldest cultivated plant in the world and its history as an effective herbal antibiotic and a booster for the immune system dates back to the days when the pyramids were built. It is natural builder of white blood cells, one of the most important constituents of the immune system.

* Carrots and other red, orange and dark green vegetables contain carotenes, which are converted into Vitamin A by the liver. These are extremely helpful for protecting thymus gland. The thymus is a ductless glandular organ at the base of the neck that produces lymphocytes. It plays an important role in producing immunity and preventing atrophies due to advanced age

* Zinc is another element that is essential for immunity. The element is next only to iron in concentration in the body. Its deficiency can impact the immune system in more ways than one. It acts as a catalyst in immune responses for killing pathogens and necessary for white blood cells to perform their functions. Peanuts, peanut butter, and legumes and dark meat of chicken, beef and lamb are excellent sources of zinc.

* Six ounces of natural and fresh yogurt every day keeps the intestinal flora healthy for proper digestion. The yoghurt bacteria convert the lactose in milk into lactic acid, which is perfect for maximizing calcium absorption, vaginal and bladder infections.

* Among the herbs for immune system, Echinacea and the Ayurvedic herb, Ashwagandha ((Withania somnifera) are worth mentioning for their stimulating affect on the immune system. There is an old saying that says that whenever in doubt: go back to nature. A natural lifestyle and home cooked food coupled with daily exercise will keep many ailments at bay.

anti-aging article

The aging process begins when we enter the world and the effects of aging are evident in our bodies through out our lives. Beginning in our 20's, the signs of aging start to become noticeable. Genetically programmed chronologic aging causes changes in collagen and elastin, the connective tissues that supply firmness and elasticity to the skin. The genetic program of individuals is different, so the loss of skin firmness and elasticity occurs at different rates and different times in one individual as compared to another. As skin becomes less elastic, it also becomes drier and underlying fat padding begins to disappear. With the loss of underlying support by fat padding and connective tissues, the skin begins to sag; it appears less supple and wrinkles form.

Although wrinkles, lines and age spots are formed by the natural effects of getting older, one way to prevent them from appearing early on in life is to avoid direct sunlight and use sunscreens with SPFs 15 or higher. And, although most of us have some form of sun-damaged skin, there are ways to regain healthy, smooth skin. After many years of research, scientists, dermatologists and plastic surgeons have discovered that a variety of natural ingredients and vitamin extracts significantly help slow down and even reverse the signs of aging skin. These ingredients are now found in many physician developed and physician recommended anti-aging skin care products, which are specified below.

Vitamin A (Retinol) - Topical Vitamin A has been suggested to help build collagen fibers within the skin in addition to its more superficial exfoliating property. This is the basis for its use in minimizing the appearance of fine wrinkle lines. Vitamin A or Retinol is the main ingredient found in TYK Young Again, M.D. Forte, DDF and SkinScience products.

Vitamin C - Vitamin C or ascorbic acid acts as an antioxidant and is considered vital in wound healing because it aids in stabilizing collagen. When applied topically, vitamin C can reduce fine lines and wrinkles and may lessen the severity of sunburns. This healing ingredient is found in SkinCeuticals, Cellex C and Obagi Cffectives skin care products.

Vitamin E - Vitamin E is another antioxidant that shows to have anti-inflammatory effects on the skin. When applied topically, vitamin E has been shown to improve moisturization, softness and smoothness and also provides modest photo protection. Vitamin E is found in Cellex C, Exuviance and MD Forte products.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) - AHAs are designed to smooth fine lines and surface wrinkles, to improve skin texture and tone, to unblock and cleanse pores, to improve oily skin or acne, and to improve skin condition in general. AHAs are the main ingredients found in MD Forte, TYK Young Again, Super Skin and SkinScience products.

Glycolic Acid - Glycolic acid is the most active and beneficial of the Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids (AHAs) in skin care. Once inside the cells, the acid triggers new formations of collagen to plump cells and the ground substances in the skin to reduce wrinkles on the skin's surface. Glycolic acid is proven to be very effective in the treatment of acne as well as in cosmetic uses. Glycolic acid is found in products by Gly Derm, MD Forte, Z. Bigatti and Super Skin.

N-6 furfuryladenine (kinetin) - The nature-identical plant growth factor, furfuryladenine, retards the aging of plant cells as well as in vitro human skin fibroblasts. This natural, anti-aging ingredient has been proven to reduce wrinkles and fine lines and is exclusively found in Kinerase creams and lotions. This is a proven alternative for people with sensitive skin or people who are sensitive to products containing Retinol and Vitamin C.
Copper Peptides are the latest scientific breakthrough in skin rejuvenation. Copper has been found to naturally firm the skin, enhance elasticity, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Copper is the main ingredient in products by Neova and Osmotics.

Pal-KTTKS - Pal-KTTKS is an effective ingredient for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It's found to promote a smoother, younger complexion quickly, without with out expensive and painful chemical peels, surgery or injections. This patented peptide solution is found in StriVectin-SD.

Green Tea Extract - Green tea's anti-inflammatory and anti-growth qualities are found in many skin care products designed to reduce the appearance of puffiness, wrinkles, fine lines and large pores. Green Tea is found in the Dr. Brandt skin care line, Z. Bigatti and Gly Derm products.

TNS - The biotechnology of the skin's natural healing process has arrived with the first tissue repairing complex containing growth factors found in normal, healthy skin. Unlike anything else currently on the market, TNS is the next level of skin rejuvenation that delivers dramatic results, for smoother, softer, younger looking skin. TNS is found in SkinMedica's TNS Recovery Complex.

Many customers ask which anti-aging product is best and we always respond by saying that there is no best product. Since every individuals skin is different, the results of using anti-aging products will be different as well. We recommend that you consult with a skin care professional prior to use of any new skin care product to determine your skin type, skin condition and possible sensitivities to active ingredients. Your skin care professional may recommend specific products, or you can try a few on your own based on your consultation. If you are not happy with the first product you try, try another one. It's important that you choose a product and skin care regimen that makes you feel 100% comfortable with the look and feel of your skin.

Customers also inquire about when they should expect to see results from using anti-aging products. Again, we respond by saying that results will be different for each individual, generally due to the condition of ones skin prior to use. However, across the board, we say not to expect a miracle, as there is no anti-aging product on the market that provides overnight results. Whether you are trying to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, puffiness or age spots, the process is gradual and takes anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks depending on the severity of your problem areas. After allowing the products time to take effect as well as following product directions, you can be sure to notice significant improvement in the appearance of your skin.

To see the quickest results, you will have to undergo professional cosmetics procedures. While procedures such as laser treatments, injections and dermabrasion produce the fastest, most noticeable improvements, they are all are somewhat painful or uncomfortable and very costly. In addition, pre and post treatment plans are required to achieve maximum results, which consist of using skin care products, that are also proven to be safe, effective, painless and less expensive alternatives to professional cosmetic procedures.

Please note that with the use of any new skin care product, it is highly possible that your skin will react to the ingredients. You may experience irritation, redness, dryness or a mild breakout, which should only last for the first 3-5 days of use. If you experience any of these reactions for a longer period of time, please discontinue use and consult a skin care professional. It is also recommended that prior to using any new skin care product to consult with a skin care professional.

How to stay healthy and maximize your results on a low carb diet

We know that low carb dieting works, but did you know that nutritional
supplements can help it work better? First the basics on low-carb
dieting.

Q: What are carbs?

A:
Carbs (carbohydrates) are organic compounds that exist in foods as a sugar, a
starch, or a cellulose (a woody fiber). There are two kinds of carbohydrates:
Simple (refined) carbohydrates are “fast” sugars. They break down into sugar
fast in your system, and cause a rush of insulin to come to help process the
sugar, which then leaves your system unbalanced, with too much insulin. Simple
carbs like cake have been stripped of fiber and nutrients, then processed into
starchy, sugary foods like white breads, donuts, cookies, white rice, pasta, and
such. They sure help you gain weight! They can also lead to a dangerous
condition called metabolic syndrome, which can lead to diabetes and other
serious health problems.

Complex (unrefined) carbohydrates are “slow”
sugars. They break down into sugar slower in your system, and cause a slow
release of insulin, keeping a proper sugar-insulin balance. It’s harder for your
body to burn foods like brown rice and whole grains. These unrefined carbs also
make your body burn some fat for energy. These carbs give you slow, steady
source of energy.

Simple and complex carbohydrates are rated with
something called the Glycemic Index or GI. To find out more about the Glycemic
Index, click here.

Q: What does a low-carb
diet do?

A: A low carb diet (perhaps better named a low
simple-carb diet) strictly limits your carbohydrate intake, and forces your body
to burn mostly fat. It can do this because limiting carbs limits sugar. There is
less sugar to burn, so your body turns to all that extra stored fatto burn for
energy! That’s why you lose weight on a low-carb diet.

Be sure to ask a
doctor or health care professional if low-carb eating is a good choice for you.
Here are nutritional supplements from Botanic Choice that can benefit your
health during low carb dieting:

Mom & Baby

After a baby is delivered, it is important that new moms maintain their physical and psychological health, as well as that of their newborn.

Addressing the health of mothers includes psychological issues surrounding mood, stress and relaxation, as well as physical areas such as healing, breast-feeding and energy levels. Baby’s health issues include sleep and relaxation, cradle-cap, teething and much more.

Men’s Health

Men’s health is not just about toughing it out when they’re sick; it’s about illness prevention and living well. For men, staying healthy means taking care of the mind as well as the body, so it is important to pay attention to exercise, diet and overall stress maintenance.

Also, learning more about the top health concerns for men – heart disease, cholesterol, stroke, prostate cancer, and lung cancer – will help with disease prevention; staying informed on other areas such as fertility and sexual dysfunction is also important.

General Health

Whether you’re a parent or child, man or woman, young or old, staying healthy is very important. Maintaining an individual’s overall wellbeing can involve treating everything from colds and flu, to cuts and scrapes, and sometimes even embarrassing conditions like diarrhea or body odor.

Keeping the right tools on hand (both treatments and information) will prevent frustration and help in the time of crisis; even if the crisis is just a bruised knee from a bicycle fall, a sore elbow from too much tennis, the sniffles, or a quick immunity boost in hopes of avoiding the seasonal cold.

Children’s Health

When parents think about their child’s health, it is important that they not only consider the physical wellbeing of the child, but the psychological and social health as well.

This broad field of children’s health includes psychological issues surrounding mood, behavior, learning, and concentration, as well as physical areas such as appetite, bedwetting, fever, sleep, chicken pox, tantrums, weight loss, and more.

It even includes complicated, and increasingly diagnosed behavioral health issues like Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Body & Physical Health

The human body is a highly complex mechanism. Body or physical health refers to the overall condition of that system. We say that optimal physical health is achieved when the body is free from disease, abnormality and injury, and is able to function well.

However, often the body does not function well when it is attacked by environmental elements, genetic malfunction, injury, and biological intrusions. These factors can result in a multitude of ailments that affect the thyroid and adrenal glands, as well as the liver and pancreas. They can cause damage to the respiratory system (bronchitis, asthma, etc), hinder digestive processes, and even cause cancer.

Beauty & Personal Care

Taking proper care of your body involves more than just exercise, nutrition, and treating diseases or ailments; it can also mean maintaining standards of personal hygiene and treating yourself right on the outside. Often seen as luxuries, it’s important to keep up with personal care because it can have immense healing effect on both the mind and body.

Many ailments can affect your outward appearance and cause severe discomfort both physically and mentally. From simple issues like dry skin, damaged hair or poor nail care, to more complex conditions such as psoriasis, balding, acne or weight troubles, taking care of your personal hygiene and outer body can be a big part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
